Such tears had been shed beforen, and would be again- by others like her and jet unlike her. And the winds would dry them all.
...as the fat man attempted to open a Warren and failed
Toc the Younger hat einige Vorahnungen. Die sich dann ja leider auch erfüllen:
Toc the Younger plunged into that tear and disappeared into swirling mists.
"Whose Warren did Starvald Demelain belong to?"
"It was the home of Dragons, Adjunct"
Furchtbar.
So viel erst einmal zu mir.
I finished chapter 14 yesterday and want to post my impressions.. Now we meet again with Lorn&Tool and Paran&Toc on their way to Daruhjistan. And of course with Kruppe and his "Team" outside Daruhjistan.

Coll's change was very interesting.. He seems to give up his life as a drunkard and tries to pick up his old life as a noble. And Crokus is still annoying *g* Always talking so much..
And we have again Sorry following the group with the mission to kill Crokus. Should become very interesting when everyone is meeting outside Daruhjistan..

To fling this Jaghut Tyrant into the hands of the Empire's enemy, to trust this Tiste Andii Anomander Rake to destroy it, yet a great cost to himself - thus opening the way for Malazan sorceries in turn to kill the Son of Darkness - now seemed precipitous, absurd in its ambitions.
Hm, Laseen seems to be very naive and incompetent.
Or she knows more than everyone and the plan works.

Ok, I'm going o summarize the 14th chapter and my thoughts of it :D
The introductory poem is clearly about Tattersail, sitting as a Child before her Deck. The Obelisk refers undoubtly to the pillar of stone marking the Jaghut's barrow.
We're back to Lorn and Tool. Lorn is still argueing with herself and fighting her own self, the woman Lorn. Tool tells her why nobody ever found the barrow of the tyrant. The barrow is Omtose Phellack, which is a Warren lost to the world. But because the Imass' Tellan is of the same kind, Tool can reach it. He also was chosen to attempt the freeing because he's clanless. And the whole thing is a risky gamble contrived by Laseen, hoping by freeing the Jaghut, that Rake and his sword will stop him or try at least and thus be occupied, when the empire is going to take Darujhistan.
We also learn through Tool more about the history of the Tiste Andii and that some felt betrayed by the Godess Darkness and moved because of this to another Warren, the First Warren and was once belonging to the Dragons, Starvald Demelain.
Kruppe, Crokus, Murillio and Coll are leaving the City on their mission to observe for Baruk. And Sorry is following them unseen, to kill Crokus.
After finding the barrow marker, Lorn wanders and getting into conflict with herself and beeing the Adjunct to the Empress - again. Lorn is not the tough person she first appeared to be:
'Oh Laseen,' she murmured, tears welling in her eyes, 'I know why we fear this Jaghut Tyrant. Because he became human, he became like us, he enslaved, he destroyed, and he did better than we could.'
[..]Who wept from her eyes? she wondered. Was it Lorn, or Laseen?
Will Lorn in the end try to prevent the freeing herself? Or will she surrender to being the Adjunct.
Paran and Toc find the dead ravens roasted by Hairlock. And Toc expierences that for his lost eye he gained the ability to see what happens in the near future:
He saw a small shape, moving so fast as to be but a blur. Horses screamed, and a massive tear opened up in the air. He jolted, as if something large and heavy had struck him, and the tear yawned, swirling darkness beyond
He warns Paran. Paran, however, is not worried, but eager and gripping his sword Chance.
A short chapter, but revealing a lot about the Jaghut, Lorn and the Tiste Andii. *ja*

You get to know it in chapter 16. There, Paran's ambitions are made clear.
But I wanted to say something about the 15th chapter. Liked it very much. Much more than the chapter before because so much happens.
First of all, Hairlock appears on Rhivi Plain, meets Paran and wants to kill him.
During that fight Toc the Younger gets thrown into another Warren :( Poor Toc.
But before Hairlock is able to kill Paran Quick Ben contacts Sorry/Cotillion and refers to the deal he made with Shadowthrone. He tells him Hairlock's position, so that he can send his Hounds, but now ST isn't Ben's only enemy any more..Cotillion belongs to them, too.
The man would pay for his many deceits.
Oh, oh. From now on Quick Ben should be very careful..
And then, finally, Quick Ben cuts Hairlock's strings, so that he's now unable to jump into the Warrens any more. Haha!
Paran becomes more and more likeable to me. I liked his dry coment on Hairlock as he gets torn apart by the Hounds and Paran sees a Great Raven:
'Too bad,' Paran said to it, 'I doubt it remains would be palatable.'
Hehe, I think his character already developed very much. He becomes more complex and interesting to me.
He isn't afraid of the Hounds anymore and of dying..So he tried to make a stand against them. He has lost Tattersail and after that Toc...surely he thinks that he doesn't have anything to lose.
But then Anomander appears. Yeah! And as normal, he rocks the scene and scares the sh*t out of the Hounds. But however the 7 Hounds attack and the fight takes only some seconds.. At the end two Hounds lay on the Ground, dead.
Loved this dialogue, Paran starts:
'You just killed two Hounds of Shadow.'
'The others withdrew.'
'Who are you?'
Haha, surely, Rake is an arrogant bastard..But he's worthy of it, I think ;-)
After that he calls Shadowthrone and forces him to back out of the game..and he really calls Cotillion back but says, that he himself isn't involved..But I don't believe it. It was his idea too, at the beginning where Shadowthrone and Cotillion both met Sorry and discuss what to do with her.
Although I didn't really get why Shadowthrone gives in so easily. And why he doesn't seem angry. Does he have another plan?
I liked this dialogue, too:
A smile entered Rake's tone. 'Convince him [Cotillion] of the wise course, Shadowthrone. I have no patience for your games. If I am pushed, by either of you, your Hounds, or by the Rope, I'll make no distinction. I will assail the Shadow Realm, and you are invited to try to stop me.'
'You lack all subtlety,' the god said, sighing.
*g*
But Shadowthrone doesn't seem angry or afraid..Or does he just pretend to be so calm? I don't know but I expected a fight between the two.
After that there was this confusing scene where Paran touches the blood of one dead Hound and gets into the Realm within Dragnipur where the people, Rake killed, are chained to a big wagon they had to pull for all eternity.
Somehow, with the unvoluntary help of Oponn, he manages to free the Hounds from there so that they can go through Hoods Gate. But how he really does it...I didn't get it.. Perhaps someone can explain it xD Although it's not very important...The aim of this scene was to show, that Paran isn't anymore that "normal" person he was before...
So at the end we get to know that Sorry isn't obsessed anymore and Crokus should leave his friends and bring her to his uncle so that he can help her..Poor girl. Should be very confused now..

Also hetzt Paran Hounds auf Oponn.

The ends of the chains reach into the Warren of Darkness (Kurals Galain or something :D) The hounds wanted to kill Oponn or went just mad by his presence (why? I have no idea. Maybe because Oponn plays against Shadowthrone in this game). Paran listens to Oponn and uses him as a bait. The hounds now left Dragnipur and entered the Warren of High House Dark. If it goes better there for them is unclear, but it seems everything is better than Dragnipur.
Funny was also that Paran was disappointed when the brother instead of the sister arrived *grins*.

Aye! Me too. Unbelieveable that Rope let go of her, just on the whim of Shadowthrone. Now we also know why Rope took the girl, he wanted the throne of the malazan empire for himself. But why? And, as Mila already mentioned: Shadowthrone gave up much too easily. I'm sure he's planing something else, or he hopes the same as Laseen that Rake will soon enough be too busy fighting the Jaghut. And then no-one will oppose him in his plans. However, does Shadowthrone know that Oponn plays also and that against him? Rope knows, did he tell?
Lorn has a connection to the Imass, that's what I'm suspecting or why is she this confused all of sudden since she's travelling with Tool?
Anyway, Lorn and Tool are on their way to enter the barrow.
But why?
Yeah, that is the big question that has been always there in my mind, reading that book. I find it to be quite annoying how little I know of everyones motives. There's no character I really care for, because I don't KNOW enough! *arghs*
I'm frustrated. You might have noticed. *mph*
Anyway, apart from that I think the final showdown is dawning. Now that Lorn and Tool have apparently succeeded in doing whatever had to be done, to wake that old Jaghut tyrant from his beauty sleep. Wonder what this Finnest acorn thing is all about. Why would it drive the tyrant so mad that when he comes looking for it he's going to destroy whatever's in his way? Or isn't that the main purpose of the acorn? Weird... o.O
The only scenes I really liked were those with Anomander. Gosh, he pretty much rocks the book, doesn't he? :D
If not for him the book would be plain boring. At least imho.
What I mostly miss in this book is some kind of humour, although dark humour it might be. I'm pretty much tired of characters drowing in agony and moaning. *yawn*
Take Lorn for an example. She's all messed up inside, not able to decide if she wants to be the cold hearted b*** she actually is, or if there's still some pittysome rest of her old self inside her. So what does she do? She sheds some tears for the sake of mankind and herself - but then she goes off to do exactly what's going to mess things up - she's actually about to bring that Tyrant back to life who wasn't put under a glacier for no reason...
I don't get Laseen, either. What is her goal? I just don't understand why she first goes off warring with Seven Cities - and when she's finally broken through the defences of at least one of the remaining cities, she starts offending her best man in the field, Dujek Onearm. So, in the end she's not only going to have her old enemies against her, but half of her own army as well. What the heck... o.O
Those Ascendants seem to be in it only for the fun-factor. At least Oponn and Shadowthrone probably are. And now that it's gotten too hot for Shadowthrone he's backing out. Though I'm not convinced that it will stay that way. Surely, he'll want to have a word with Anomander about the thing with his hounds... at least, I would, if someone killed my pets...
Good thing we're doing this "Leserunde" otherwise I'd probably have given up on this one. It's just not my favourite type of story-telling. Once, when there's really nothing else to read for me, I might try the second part, but I reckon that won't be anytime soon.
Has anyone finished book 6 yet?
I'm still reading it and perhaps if you're not so fast either, we can wait with posting about the 7th book?
I don't get Laseen, either. What is her goal? I just don't understand why she first goes off warring with Seven Cities - and when she's finally broken through the defences of at least one of the remaining cities, she starts offending her best man in the field, Dujek Onearm. So, in the end she's not only going to have her old enemies against her, but half of her own army as well. What the heck... o.O
Well, I think nobody gets Laseen.
Even Lorn is confused about the instructions the Empress gives. I find it very interesting that we haven't seen Laseen again after the scene with Paran in the first chapter.
And for me this woman has just a persecution complex (-> Verfolgungswahn, thank you, leo *g*) and thinks that everyone from the "old guard" of the Emperor is against her+she has to destroy it. But in the end she'll be there alone if she didn't change her opinion.. Don't know - perhaps she's just gone insane and nobody notices..
I read the whole 5th and 6th part and am halfway through the first chapter of the 7th part. And the things take on shape and the showdown is closing in quite exiting now. Just to mention the Encounter of Rallik and Ozelot and his using of Baruk's magic-deadening powder. :D
Weird... o.O
The acorn, which is the finnest, holds the powers of the Jaghut tyrant, that's why he'll be going to want it. If somebody steals your powers, wouldn't you turn the whole world upside down just to get them back? At least if you're a tyrant ;)
Lorn is just supposed to be the coldhearted bitch, because she's the Adjunct. Actually she should have lost all connection to her own self, becoming the Adjunct. But Lorn underneath isn't deadend that easily, it seems. I also think, as I mentioned above, that the encounter with the Imass has something to do about it.
Quite sure, also because Tool asked her to accompany him in his search of whatever he's searching for. At this point, I've been hoping she would say yes. However she hasn't decided yet. I wish she will incline. Why I don't know, just that I think it would be a good thing for her own self; and not least because it would give her the chance to strip off the Adjunct oppressing the woman Lorn.
What the heck... o.O
As any emporer it is in his or her interest to aquire an empire and to enlarge it. Like the old roman empire. Needing always more lands to conquer, until all backlashes :D. And it it's quite obvious that is about to happen soon enough with the Malazan empire. And to why, Laseen dismanteld Dujek's army: Dujek himself said it:
she seems convinced that the dismanteling of my army will pull me back under the wing, in time to saddle me with the command of the seven cities' garrisons and put a bloody stop to the rebellion that's brewing. She seriously miscalculated there -
The encounter of Rake and Paran and Paran and Tattersail-Child was quite interesting. I also appreciated it that Paran keeps the whole stuff for himself when he meets finally with Whiskyjack and his squad.
Fascinating was also the scene, where Paran was in the Phoenix Inn and occupied himself with his sword chance. I was smirking there, and had to chuckle as he left for the stairs, turning in the last moment and commanded the people sitting in the Inn, while his sword still tucked in the crack of the table:
'And nobody touch that sword', he ordered, swinging a glare across everyone in the room.
Murillio came at least to the same conclusion about the identy of the Eel, as I did *grins*
There is alot that happend in this two books, it's hard to mention here everything. And it seems the Empress never had the intention to get Darujhistan... or at least not really. :p Nice turn of the events.
So, if I recall something else, that I think is important...I'll be back with another post or with Edith *grins*
Ich bin durch mit dem 6. Teil.
I read the whole 5th and 6th part and am halfway through the first chapter of the 7th part.
I think I have to hurry up with reading.. Finished the 18th chapter but I want to start the 7th book today.
Much has been said by now but I have to add some things. I liked reading the parts about Sorry and Crokus. She seems to have lost all her memories and cannot even remember her real name. So she wants Crokus to chose a new one for her. He proposes the Name "Apsalar" to her which is the name of the God of Thieves. She agreed with it and now has a new name: Apsalar!
Crokus is undecesive and doesn't know if he should like Apsalar or not. But nevertheless he takes her to Daruhjistan in order to bring her to his uncle. Bur they don't find Crokus' uncle and have to hide because Crokus is now sought-after because he should've killed one member of the D'Arle guard..
(Well, actually it was Sorry/Apsalar..)
And Crokus' uncle Mammot is somehow trapped in a warren connected to the Jaghut and Baruk wonders whether he may be be obsessed..
The encounter of Rake and Paran and Paran and Tattersail-Child was quite interesting. I also appreciated it that Paran keeps the whole stuff for himself when he meets finally with Whiskyjack and his squad.
I liked the meeting between Paran and the Rhivi, too..
Where he says:
I would rather have no enemies at all.
Poor Paran. He's so tired of war and fighting..
The scene where he meets with Tattersail again was a bit sad.. I hope they both meet again.. And I wonder how old she may be then..She seems to age very fast ;-)
After that Paran meets Coll and they tell each other who they are and about their past..
Paran says:
I'm a deserter from the Malazan Army ranked as a Captain.
Aha, so we get to know that he really doesn't want to deal with the Malazan Empire any more.
So after that Paran takes Coll who is seriously injured to Daruhjistan..
..Where Rallick is informed by Circle-Braker, the agent of the Eel, about Turban Orr who hired hunters in order to kill Coll. So that he's not in his and Simtals way...The one who should kill Coll is Rallick's Clan-leader Ocelot..
And the things take on shape and the showdown is closing in quite exiting now. Just to mention the Encounter of Rallik and Ozelot and his using of Baruk's magic-deadening powder. :D
So we have Rallick vs. Ocelot...Don't really now but I think that this fight might be predicted earlier.. I'm going to look for this special scene..
The special powder Rallick uses is very interesting either. And also the effects it may have on him..
So at the end of chapter 18 Paran meets with the Bridgeburners again and Whiskeyjack has a conversation with Dujek. We get to know that the Empress loses Genabackis and that the Bridheburners and Paran should somehow work together with Lorn...
