Idalia und ich haben beschlossen, den zweiten Teil von Eriksons "the malazan book of the fallen" auch zusammen zu lesen, da uns die Leserunde zum ersten Teil der Reihe so gut gefallen hat.

Dies ist eine Private Leserunde, aber trotzdem sind alle eingeladen daran teilzunehmen - wir würden uns freuen!

Wir lesen wieder die englische Originalausgabe und werden auch auf englisch posten. Trotzdem könnt ihr auch teilnehmen, wenn ihr die deutsche Ausgabe lest und auf deutsch posten wollt.

Die Runde startet...jetzt :D (Man kann aber natürlich auch später einsteigen..ist schon ein wenig spontan)

So dann mach ich halt mal den Anfang *g*
Wegen der unterschiedlichen Namen im Deutsch und Englisch werden wir hoffentlich schon irgendwie zusammen kommen:)
Mila kennt ja auch die Deutsche Ausgabe.


So hab nun Kapitel 2 zu Ende gelesen möchte daher mal eine ganz kurzen Überblick machen.

Der Beginn wo Baudin Lady Gaesens mit der Ketten den Kopf absägt ist gleich mal richtig deftig und ein ganz besonderst Beispiel für die Skrupellosigkeit mit der Erikson Szenen beschreibt kann. Hätte man auch ruhig nicht so detailliert beschreiben müssen.*eyesroll*

Dann mal zu Kalam und Fiedler die gegen der Behaupt sie würde nur Apsalar und Crokus sicher nach Quon Talin begleiten wollen eigentlich ein ganz anderes Ziel verfolgen und zwar die Ermordung der Imperatrix.
Die Große Frage hierbei ist warum muss diese Aktion vom Reich der sieben Städte aus gestartet werden?

Zwei weitere bis jetzt sehr interessante Charaktere sind Icarium und sein Begleiter Mappo. Beide haben wohl schon einige Jahre auf dem Buckel:D. Wobei Icarium anscheint sein Gedächtnis an früher Zeiten verloren hat und sich auf der Suche nach Antworten befindet.
Nachdem die Beiden auf den Vielwandler getroffen sind stellt sich mir die Frage:Was sind diese so genannte Gestaltenwandler/Vielwandler eigentlich genau?
Sie können sich anscheint zischen Mensch und Tiergestalt wechseln. Interessant wäre zu wissen ob sie sich immer nur in das gleiche Tier verwandeln können oder eben nach Wunsch jeder Zeit in ein beliebig anders.


Auch ja Coltaine, Duiker gib es ja auch mhh…was gibt da groß zu sagen beide sind mir vom ersten Moment an mal sehr Sympathisch XD
Und Duiker plant wohl die Befreiung von Heboric.

So könnte jetzt noch mehr schreiben werde das aber in den nächste Tag machen ;)

I'm on page 62 now.
In this book Erikson leads us to another continent called Seven Cities and confronts us with another conflict..There are rumours about a rebellion against the Malazans who captured Seven Cities years ago..
Erikson presents us a lot of new characters. At first I didn't like it because I just got adapted to the characters of GOTM and wanted to read more about most of them. But after some time I started to like the new characters and the new story..And I knew that Erikson leads us back to the "old" characters in the next book ;-)

Ich mag Tavore genauso wenig wie Lorn. Wie kann man nur so grausam zu seiner eigenen Schwester sein? Tavore scheint sogar noch härter zu sein als ihre Vorgängerin..

Ich hab mich so gefreut wieder was über altbekannte Charaktere zu lesen! Obwohl ich Crokus noch immer nicht mag. Zu neugierig, nervig..argh..
Nur hab ich mich erst gewundert, dass Fiddler zu einer Hauptfigur wird. Im ersten Teil wurde er nur selten erwähnt. Aber ich mag ihn sehr. Er hat auch diesen typischen schwarzen "Soldaten-Humor".

I definitely love Coltaine and Bult.
Coltaine, once enemy of the Empire, is now High Fist of one malazan army..But until now it's not clear why he fights for or with the Empire...
I liked the scene in which Duiker, Kulp (--> another really cool mage!) and Mallick Rel meet Coltaine and Bult. These wickans :D strange people..
And now we know how Dujek lost his arm. It was Bults horse! :D

Conversation between Coltaine and Bult:
"...Between us, I lost the exchange, for the loss of an arm did nothing to damage Dujek's glorious career, while the loss of my beauty left me with but the one wife that I already had."
"And was she not your sister, Bult?"
"She was, Coltaine. And blind."

..wtf? :D Very strange..humour?

I liked the little hints about people we already know. Like Dujek, as I mentioned or Kellanved and Dancer..Quick Ben is already mentioned sometimes..And the old companions of the Emperor..
It's really unsure what happened to them - they all seem to be dead, but how?

Ich mag vor allem Icarium, er strahlt hat einfach eine gewisse Geheimnisvoll Aura aus.:p
Aber noch Icarium und Mappo sind ja bereits auf Iskaral Pustl, den Hocheprister des Schattens, gestoßen. Iskaral gehört wohl zu den durch gedrehtesten Charakter überhaupt und genau dafür liebe ich ihn.
Ich meine ich erkenne mich in ihm hin oder wieder selbst wieder*grins*

Da bin ich zwar noch nicht, aber ich denke nicht..Der Esel scheint nur ein ziemlich schlauer Esel zu sein :D

The difference between D’ivers and Soletaken is the D’ivers can change into several creatures whereas the Soletaken can just transform into one beast.

I like Felisin (though I would prefer her to stop taking this Durhang stuff), I like Heboric. I wonder what the connection between Baudin and Felisin is.
I hope that they will be rescued soon from the Otataral mines. Duiker arranged there something for freeing Heboric. I wonder too what the connection between Duiker and Heboric is. Old historian buddies? :D

I like Duiker, like Kulp. Coltaine….hmm…don’t know what to think of him yet. Bult, his uncle, is a very funny guy.

And then there’s Mappo and Icarium, they gripped my attention the most. They hide something, or better to say, Mappo hides something from Icarium. Icarium has lost some of his past, or most of it. And he’s looking for an answer and comprehension. Mappo tries to prevent it. There must be some very dark secret. Thrilling! *ja*
D’ivers and Soletaken are drawn to some Gate, seeking ascendancy I understand so far. The same thing Icarium is looking for.

Kalam separated from the others and is on a mission of his own, bringing a book to a seeress, named Sha’ik. Who seems to be the center or the trigger for the whirlwind. I think the whirlwind stands for the uprising of the seven cities people against the malazan empire.

Fiddler really seems to become a main character after the first book. I love this grumpy old guy :D :D

And then not to forget the high priest of shadow Istakaral Pust, an interesting and twisted character. He will be a lot of fun. Sending Mappo and Icarium on a broom quest. Hilarious *lol*

I finished the first book some minutes ago and have to say that the beginning is much more thrilling than the beginning of GOTM. So many things happened so far..

I think the most interesting part was the revelation od Shadowthrone's and Cotillion's true or former identity ;-)
Was it clear to you earlier? For me it was a big surprise but I like it very much. Good idea!

Well..Apsalar seems to have more of Cotillion's memories as I thought.. and perhaps she has not only these memories. We will see.




Fiddler really seems to become a main character after the first book. I love this grumpy old guy :D :D



And he has a very nice horse :o :D

Pust is really funny! Much more than in the german book. Strange thing xD I didn't like him so much as I read the book for the first time..but now he is somehow brilliant :D He's a bit like Kruppe, too. But I prefer reading about Pust. Kruppe was a bit more confusing and less funny.
It's funny how Pust complains about the bhok'arala xD
And this guy is a High Priest of Shadow... chosen by Shadowthrone himself, I think..

About Felisin and co.
I don't know what I should think about Felisin's change to an insensible drug addicted whore.. She only tries to survive but the way she chose..hm I don't know..
But I like Baudin *g* Making so much trouble there. Go, Baudin! ;-)
Heboric is still not very important and interesting to me.

Kulp is one of my favourite characters. He has a dry humour and reminds me a bit of Toc the Younger. Liked the scene in which he deals with the brothers from this Red Sword- Army.
He seems to become a good friend of Duiker too.

Kalam's quest is interesting too. He delivers the book to Sha'ik.
While opening the book Sha'ik gets killed by one of the Red Swords.. Nothing what I expected. But it's said that she will be reborn.

I enjoyed reading the conversation between Leoman and this Toblakai at the end of Chapter 5. Toblakai is really funny ;)

Another interesting scene to think about:
The deck of dragons the strange woman threw at Kalam.. It shows that High House Shadow and especially Cotillion are somehow connected to Kalam and his quest. And High House Death seems to be involved too...

Well, I want to read about Cotillion! But I have forgotten if he appears in this book....

Ja so überraschend es auch war, im Nachhinein gesehen fragt man sich schon warum man nicht selbst schon früher darauf gekommen ist.

Ich freu mich immer wenn ich wieder über Fiedler lesen kann.
Mit dem Spuren des Massakers, die Fiedler, Apsalar und Crokus in G’danisban vorfinden, wird uns Erksion wohl nur einen Vorgeschmack geliefert haben was noch kommen wird. Will ich mir eigentlich gar nicht aus malen. Wenn man bedenkt, dass wir erst am Anfang der Rebellion stehen.

Es scheint so und dadurch werden Icarium und Mappo wohl noch ein paar mal mit ihnen aneinander geraden.
Wir wissen nun auch das Mappo anscheint von einer mächtigen Gruppe? ,Kult?… was auch immer ausgewählt wurde um auf Icarium aufzupassen. Ab wohl nicht deswegen weil er Schutz bräuchte, sonder weil man andere vor ihm schützen muss.

Hehe ich bin gespannt ob sie diese doch sehr schwere „Quest“ auch bestehen können. XD

Ich finde es sehr interessant, dass man im zu der Geschichte immer wieder die Hinweise sieht wie weitreichend Erksion die Vergangenheit seiner Welt durchdacht hat und uns immer in kleinen Teil, oft auch ganz unscheinbar, hinhält. Es macht einfach Spaß diese Puzzle teile zusammenzufügen XD

I read chaper 8 in which Felisin, Baudin and Heboric reach the coast and are now waiting for a ship to arrive.
Much happened so far. The rebellion started after Sha'iks death. Felisin, Baudin and Heboric escaped the Otataral Mines and went through the desert.

I don't like Felisin and her comments..She's unfair, selfish and too cynical.
And so cruel to Heboric. They didn't treat her in such a bad way..She could be thankful for them taking her out of the mines...
The scene with Heboric and that Jade statue was quiet interesting..Don't know what really happened to him and what the thing really is..
And then there was the scene with Fener.. He seems to be pushed out of his warren/sphere(?) and now wanders among humans..and is vulnerable..But we don't know how this really happened.

I still like Kulp. There are so many funny scenes involving him.
For example his answer to Duiker who told him about the ship he bought for Kulp so that he can meet up with Heboric and co. at the coast.
But Kulp doesn't seem to be amused ;-)

Wrapped in his army-issue raincape, Kulp had not moved from where he stood on the dock. "And what," he asked tonelessly, "did you pay for this ... boat?"
The historian sighed glancing up at the mage. "Can you not repair it? What was your warren again, Kulp?"
"Boat repair," the man answered.

Finally, Gesler and Stormy make their first appearance. I love those two soldiers and they belong to my favourite characters at all.

And Coltaine's march began..He flew with his army and many refugees he now has to protect..And they are followed by another army led by Kamist Reloe.

And not to forget Kalam, still going for the Empress. He is now "accompanied" by a very funny Aptorian that/who has an argument with one of the D'ivers. ;)

Until now the story is very thrilling.

Which story-line do you like most until now?
I don't know so far..
There are not so many anymore..
Gesler, Stormy, Kulp and co. meet up with Felisin and co,
Fiddler, Apsalar and Crokus with Icarium, Mappo and Pust..
And Duiker finally catches up with Coltaine's army..
And there's of course Kalam.
These are the main story-lines I think.

I finished chapter 8.

Steven Erikson proves with this book a lot of humor. Especially with Iskaral Pust.

Something ragged across his brow awoke Fiddler. [...]
'Spiders in your beard... or worse. Can't see them, but I know they're there.'
[...]
[Fiddler] 'What's the man's [Iskaral Pust] story?'
[Mappo] 'I doubt even he knows.'
'I awoke when he was sweeping my head.'
'Not surprising'
*lol* *rofl*

The joke of Kulp with his boat repair warren made me laugh, too. *lol*

I wanted to remark that Deathouse Gates, Erikson's second book, shows a huge development in writing style and character development compared to Gardens of the Moon.
The characters are very vivid and convincing, if sometimes appalling so. :D

The storyline is much easier to follow. Though it's still not as easy as one might think ;)
However I started to ask myself if Gardens of the Moon was a means to seperate the worthy from the unworthy. *grins*
I don't want to say Deadhouse Gates isn't keeping you in the dark, but it gives the impression to shed more light on what's going on. An illusion that is created through the characters who draws you into the story than keeping you on distance. Erikson finally achieved a depth I cherish, more so since he carries the story on several main characters.

Sooo, enough praise for today :D

There is still a lot to wonder and muse about, open questions, hints, and the like... having the potential to drive you crazy. :)
E.g. the trio Heboric, Felisin and Baudin. What the heck is going on between them and with each of them?!
Felisin behaves all of sudden very uncomprehensible. She's bitchy, malicious and and plain mean. Couldn't be she's just pissed off because Baudin left Beneth to die, could she? Didn't know Felisin was in love with Beneth...
And how she turned on Heboric. He always cared for her, when Beneth's almost beaten her to death, when she was attacked by these bloodflies, how he vowed to find her a Healer with High Denul to remove the pockmarks... And Heboric still protects her...Why? Felisin didn't care if he had died during their flight to the coast, wanted him dead even, just because he was a hindrance.
However, as she wonders what and who Baudin really is and what he's planning, I do as well. Baudin's true identity remains hidden. There's more to this man than meets the eye. ;)

A lot happened also Heboric. For instance his tattoos, touching this jade finger - what the hell lies there hidden under the sand? Will we get to know? -, releasing Fener into the mortal realm. Why is Fener hiding, what makes him vulnerable?

Fiddler, Crokus and Apsalar meet with Mappo and Icarium in the Raraku desert, and end up in the rock-appartment of Pust :D. Poor Fiddler.

Kalam and his three-legged aptorian Apt *lol* We still have to see what happens with them.

@Mila I cannot decide which storyline I like the most. They are all very interesting and gripping *ja*

I'm now at the beginning of chapter 11.



The storyline is much easier to follow. Though it's still not as easy as one might think ;)

Yes, that's my opinion too. It's easier to follow because we get to know a lot of things like the conflicts, some parts of the history or the different races in the first book. Moreover we've got less storylines and Erikson doesn't switch the point of view very often. I think the whole 10th chapter is written by Duiker's pov.
But there are also many things you don't understand by now..For example what's going on with this Dragon Kulp and the others saw..And what happened to these Tiste Edur on the Silanda...and so on...
But I like it this way ;-)



E.g. the trio Heboric, Felisin and Baudin. What the heck is going on between them and with each of them?!

I really dislike Felisin...Why does she want to hurt Heboric all the time? Has she gone mad? I think someone has to punch her in the face..
I wondered why Baudin saved her from this "fire". He has no reason to act so... And she's also not nice to him.. They should leave her in this strange warren..Then she can argue with the dragon or whatever..

The scene there was not so easy to understand..I think they are all caught in this special warren of a mad mage and need to find a way out. T'lan Imass appear and somehow "cure" the warren, which had a kind of "illness" or was simply rotten, by sacrificing one of them..

And then there's Duiker finally catching up with Coltaine and his people..
They encounter Reloe's army and although they seem to be doomed, because Coltaine protects many Injured and Refugees, they win the first battle..
The description of the fight was very thrilling and I definitely like the sappers and their invisible commander *g*

Ich bin kurz davor Kapitel 10 abzuschließen also wird es wohl zeit mal wieder etwas zu schreiben.

In den letzen Kapiteln haben sich die Ereignisse ja förmlich überschlagen, dass man gar nicht auf alles richtig eingehen kann. Sie haben uns einige Antworten geben aber wohl mehr neue Fragen aufgeworfen.


Erksion zeigt uns ohne irgendwelche Romantisierungen die Grausamkeit eines Krieges. Wie Duiker immer mehr seine Gefühle in sich einschließt um als Historiker noch arbeiten zu können.
Dann der Adel der trotz des Krieges nicht auf seine Privilegien verzichten will. Aber es gibt ja Gott sei Dank Coltaine der sie immer wieder abblitzen lässt:p
Erksion vergisst auch nicht zu beschreiben, dass so ein Trupp aus Soldaten und Flüchtigen irgendwie mit Wasser und Nahrung versorgt werden muss. Was mir bei machen Bücher doch irgendwie abgeht ^^
Durch Nil erfahren wir, dass es anscheint auch eine Magie gibt die älter ist als jene der Gewirre.

Durch die Szenen auf dem Schiff wissen jetzt, dass es drei Tiste Völker gibt die alle aus andren Sphären/ Gewirren auf die Welt kamen und das Kurald Emurlahn, dass ja Schattenthron und Cotillion in Besitz genommen haben anscheinend einst den Tiste Edur gehörte.
Dazu kommt noch, dass die T’lan Imass unsere zusammen gewürfelte Mannschaft als Diener des Angeketteten beschuldigen. Da stellt sich die Frage: Wer ist dieser Angekettet und was macht es so schlimm ein Diener von ihm zu sein? Für mich hört es sich so an als wäre der Angekettete irgendein Gott.

War sie für mich auch..bis Pearl aufgetaucht ist..Ich kann ihn absolut nicht ausstehen. Und das, was er in einem späteren Buch getan hat, hat mich nur bestätigt.. Er ist ein arrogantes, feiges A****loch..


Erksion zeigt uns ohne irgendwelche Romantisierungen die Grausamkeit eines Krieges. Wie Duiker immer mehr seine Gefühle in sich einschließt um als Historiker noch arbeiten zu können.

Das fand ich auch heftig..Er verliert sich immer mehr in Tagträumen über seine Vergangenheit etc., um die Gegenwart ein wenig "wegzuschließen"..Armer Kerl.

Dieses Zitat hier zum Krieg hat mir sehr gut gefallen:

"Children are dying."
Lull nodded. "That's a succinct summary of humankind, I'd say. Who needs tomes and volumes of history? Children are dying. The injustices of the world hide in those three words. Quote me, Duiker, and your work's done."

There's not much more to say..He is so right..

Finally we get to know the truth about Baudin. He is a "Talon" which are the forerunner of the Claw, comanded by Dancer. It is said that they've vanished after the fall of Kellanved..So we get to know that they still exist..
Baudin was sent by Tavore to protect Felisin.. Now I wonder how Tavore got in contact with the Talon..And why she chose one of them. She is the Adjunct of the Empress but the Empress regards the Talon as her enemies..

And after Felisin told Baudin that she doesn't need him and he should go away he acts exactly this way and leaves the group..Not what I expected and Felisin was a bit surprised too.. She obviously didn't expect him to really leave them all..
I agree with Kulp :
Kulp spoke. "I've mind to join him and drag you with me, Heboric. Leave this foul witch to herself and Hood take her with my blessing."

But Heboric thinks that he owes her something because she saved his life and so they stay with her.

There is still the question how Heboric recovers so fast, became so strong and what the hell is going on with his ghost hands.. It couldn't be Fener who protects him. I think it has something to do with this Jade statue..

Another thing that is explained is the mystery about servant..He is Apsalars father given to Pust as a "present" by Shadowthrone.. This Shadowthrone seems to have planned a lot..

So now Apsalar follows his father across the Raraku and the Whirlwind..
Apsalar should become the new Sha'ik.. Wow, I didn't expect this..very interesting.
But Shadowthrone and Cotillion seem to have planned this too..From the very beginning.

:D That would be great! Pust as the Emperor. What would he do? Send his army on a broom quest?

At the moment I'm a bit bored of Kalam's story-line, because they are wandering and wandering through the Imperial Warren and Minala is annoying..Kalam should lead all his companions to Aren and then go on alone..That's more interesting.

I liked the scene with Shadowthrone and Apt.
Apt wants to take the dead or nearly-dead malazan children as servants to Shadow realm and Shadowthrone is not very pleased ;)

"Am I a cutter? A healer?" Shadowthrone's voice was rising octave by octave. "Is Cotillion a kindly uncle? Are my Hounds farmyard skulkers and orphan's puppies?

Very nice imagination..Cotillion playing with children on the playground.

But finally ST accepts Apt's offer with another idea or plan in mind..

Nun ich hab heute Kapitel 14 begonnen.


War sie für mich auch..bis Pearl aufgetaucht ist..Ich kann ihn absolut nicht ausstehen. Und das, was er in einem späteren Buch getan hat, hat mich nur bestätigt.. Er ist ein arrogantes, feiges A****loch..

Naja ich mag Pearl zwar auch nicht gerade aber er muss sich bei mir hinter Felisin einreihen ;-)


Dieses Zitat hier zum Krieg hat mir sehr gut gefallen:

Cotillion als Onkel klinkt doch gut.
Die Szene war einfach nur witzig und hat das ganz zwischen durch wieder gut aufgelockert. Denn man will ja zwischen auch lachen und nicht immer über den Krieg und Tod lesen müssen.;)
Weiter hat mir sehr gefallen, dass man hier ganz gut sehen kann, dass in Erksions Welt Dämonen keinesfalls einfach nur blutrünstig dumme Wesen sind.

Kalam ist ja nun in Aren angekommen.
Aber die Frage ist wer ist dieser„Salk Elan“ und warum wusste er, dass Kalam genau in diesem einen Gasthaus vorzufinden sein wird.
